Square dancing is a unique opportunity to learn and participate in one of the most historical forms of American Folk Dance. Square dancing is an excellent cooperative activity whose roots reflect both our cultural diversity and shared heritage. Square dancing teaches friendliness, courtesy, structure, respect, and cooperation.
Square Dancing Teaches:
* Accurate reaction to directions - The correct use of left, right, forward, and back.
* The importance of following rules - Correctly following dance patterns as described and modeled.
* Listening Skills - Learning to listen carefully and to listen for dance cues while dancing.
* Dancing in Rhythm with Music - Learning to move in different tempos as set by dance music.
* Courtesy - Learning and practicing the courtesies common to both partner and group social dance activities.
* Simple Dance - Learning and practicing some enjoyable and straight forward dances and having fun.
Square Dancing satisfies the need for introducing cooperation skills without the elements of competition and defeat. Everyone wins, and nobody loses. Square Dancing teaches discipline movement where children must respond to a precise movement at an accurate time.
